Electronics enclosures

QuantCAD designs electronics enclosures around the board you describe: PCB size, wall thickness, internal clearance, mounting bosses, cutouts for connectors and switches, and how the lid attaches. The parts are B-rep solids, so every cutout and boss has exact dimensions you can check and adjust. Export STEP for your CAD tool or STL to print a prototype.

What does a good enclosure prompt look like?

Start by describing the internal payload (PCB, battery, connectors), then define the enclosure rules: wall thickness, clearances, cutouts, and how the lid attaches.

PCB enclosure with lid

Create an electronics enclosure for a PCB sized 70mm x 40mm x 12mm. Outer walls 2.2mm thick, internal clearance 0.6mm all around. Add 4 mounting bosses for M3 screws at the PCB corners with 3.2mm clearance holes and 6mm boss OD. Add a USB-C cutout centered on the short side (10mm x 4mm) and a side switch cutout (6mm x 3mm). Use a two-part design: base + lid with 1.5mm overlap lip and 0.25mm clearance for a snug fit. Add light vent slots on the opposite side.

What to specify

  • Internal payload size (PCB, connectors, battery, cable bend radius).
  • Wall thickness and internal clearance, and the manufacturing process.
  • Exact cutout sizes and locations, relative to a face or edge.
  • Mounting strategy (bosses, inserts, standoffs, screws).
  • Lid strategy (snap fit, screws, overlap lip, gasket).

Frequently asked questions

Can I specify cutouts and mounting features?

Yes. Include the cutout sizes and positions (USB, switches, displays, vents) and the mounting requirements (bosses, hole diameters, standoffs or threaded inserts) directly in your prompt.

Can I export an enclosure to STEP?

Yes. QuantCAD exports STEP (AP242, millimetres), which opens as solid bodies in standard CAD tools for final detailing and manufacturing. STL is available for printing a prototype.

How do I handle clearances and fits?

Call out clearances explicitly, for example 0.2 to 0.5 mm depending on the process, and name the interface: snap fit, press fit, screw bosses or a gasketed lid.

Can QuantCAD design the base and the lid as separate parts?

Yes. Describe the enclosure as a two-part design, such as a base and a lid with an overlap lip, and give the clearance between them. Each part is built as its own B-rep solid.
